My Story
My career in mental health started as volunteer at the South African Depression and Anxiety group (SADAG). I only had my junior degree at the time and thus could not practice as a Psychologist. I started off working with the organisation twice a week as well as, on an ad-hoc basis. During my time there I was involved in various projects including teen suicide prevention, teen substance abuse prevention and mental health awareness projects. I also provided counselling telephonically.
After 3 months as a volunteer, I was offered a full time position at SADAG. I ended staying at the organisation for 3 years. By the time I left, I had my honours degree (which I had obtained via correspondence through UNISA) and I had been promoted to Senior Counsellor. I left SADAG to pursue my Master’s Degree at Wits University, which I completed through coursework, dissertation and internship (at PsyCAD) in 2015. I went on to work for Catalyx Consulting and subsequently ICAS southern Africa, where I still work on a part time basis.
I believe that walking with people through their challenges, is my life’s calling. It is a role that I have often filled throughout my life in a personal capacity, and now I am fortunate to do it professionally as well.
